Special Edition Running Club- Hillendale Winter Run for Their Sons!- NEW DATE

When: Tuesday, January 23rd at 8:00 AM
Who: All Hillendale staff, students (K-5) and parents are welcome!!
Where: The Hillendale Trail

Why: Joanna Johnson (Unionville High School teacher), has two sons, Elliott and Henry, who have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  Duchenne is a catastrophic muscle wasting disease that affects all the muscles of the body, including the heart and lungs.  Most boys with Duchenne lose the ability to walk by their teens.  This is followed by severe lung and heart complications.  Survival beyond age thirty is rare.  There is no cure.

The Johnsons helped start the Run for Our Sons, an annual spring fundraising event and the reason that our Hillendale Running Club exists. However, at Joanna’s and Paul’s insistence, all the proceeds are used for Duchenne research; none of the proceeds go to the Johnson family.  Now is a time when the Johnsons themselves could use a helping hand!!!

Event Details:
  • Participants will run, jog or walk around the trail as many times as they want from 8:00-8:40.
  • Parents are welcome but do not need to attend for their child to participate- there will be plenty of adults to supervise.
  • A registration fee of $5 per participant will be collected at the event. If paying by check, please make check payble to the PTO.
  • If you can't participate but would like to donate, Click here or visit the Hillendale Web Page http://hes.ucfsd.org/. Go to the PTO link and then click the Online Store link on the left side.
  • All money collected goes directly to the Johnson family so they can purchase a van to transport Elliott and Henry independently and safely
  • Bundle up!!! It will most likely be very cold!!!

MLK Day Of Service:

The MLK Committee sends BIG thanks to everyone that came out last week to the MLK Day of Service.  We not only had a large number of families from Hillendale but we also had 23 High School Students that came to help and earn service hours.  You made 300 bagged lunches that went to Safe Harbor in West Chester and 100 Quarts of Chicken Noodle Soup that went to the Kennett Senior Center.  The ladies in the Senior Center Cafeteria were absolutely thrilled and sent a group hug to all.  It truly was a great day!

Let's Dine Together:

Let's Dine Together!  With the community's help, we are close to putting a van on the road for the Johnson family.
Sovana Bistro has graciously agreed to donate a percentage of the tab for meals, beverages, and even take out orders on January 28th, 4:30pm to 9pm to the Johnson family so that they can purchase a van to accommodate two wheelchairs for their sons.
We need to pack Sovana Bistro, one of Unionville's most popular dining destinations, so, join us in celebrating the Unionville community and the Johnson family.
Make your reservations, stop by or pick up a take out order; mention the Johnson Project when making the reservation or when placing your order.

Let's enjoy a fine time together, an excellent meal, and an opportunity to  reach the goal!

Correction and Update to MLK Day of Service

We apologize but the eNews yesterday had some incorrect information regarding our MLK Day of service and we wanted to get you the correct information as soon as possible.

First, the date for the day of service is Monday, January 15th not the 16th.

Second - we will NOT be collecting for backpacks this year, so there is no need to send in supplies for that. We hope to bring this back another year.

With that said we do have a lot going on that day and would love for you and your kids to come help at HES. So please take time on our day off and come help make soup, sandwiches, cookies, cards and placemats.

The day of service will take place in the cafeteria, so please enter through the lower gym entrance. These opportunities will be provided in two sessions:

Session #1 9:00 -10:00

Session #2 10:15 - 11:15

We need volunteers for the following activities during each session:

Cook Soup

Bake Cookies

Make Snack Mix

Make Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches

Decorate Bags for lunches

We really hope you will join us on January 15 for our MLK Day of Service!
