Special E-News: Annual Fund and Lawsuit Update

Annual Fund Update

As 2017 draws to a close, don’t forget to include the PTO Annual Campaign in your year end charitable contribution.   100% goes to funding PTO activities, including Teacher Grants, Family Fun Nights, Assemblies, Assignment Books for students, and special projects, to name a few of the many services the PTO provides.

The PTO spends approximately $75 per student each year.  We have only reached 25% of our goal of 10,000 for the 2017/2018 school year.   Please consider contributing to the fund today!

Contributions are 100% tax deductible in 2017.  You can return the form that came home with your student or go to  https://squareup.com/market/hillendale/item/donation to pay by credit card.

Lawsuit Update

According to court dockets and pleadings, the lawsuit that was filed against Mr. Dissinger, Jen Scattolino, and the PTO has ended.  Ms. Carmody took an unlikely and novel path as a Plaintiff to end this by discontinuing her complaint with prejudice.  After her first two complaints were dismissed by the Judge assigned to the case, Ms. Carmody terminated her own lawsuit, essentially acknowledging that her lawsuit was without merit and that it she had no right to file it in the first place.

Jen should never have been named in the suit, given that as a volunteer she is protected from suit by both state and federal statutes.  The judge dismissed her from the case twice before based on this, and the third result would have been the same.  The proper form of action against the PTO was never filed for an unknown reason, and Mr. D. was left out because no cause of action was available against him, either.

This is a unique procedural result, as it is rare, if not unheard of, that someone dismisses their own case with prejudice.  While normally part of a judicial decision, this move on Ms. Carmody’s part indicated that she realized that the case had no merit and that it should not have been filed to begin with.  Fortunately, she did the right thing for the community and ended the matter.

The PTO is thankful for the support shown by our parents throughout this process. We are also extremely grateful for the time and effort put in by Al Iacocca.  Because of him the suit did not cost us anything.  All of the money set aside for legal fees can instead be used on student activities and material, and a revised budget will be voted on at an upcoming meeting.

UCFSD Emergency Communications System Test:

Dear UCFSD Families

During emergencies, the importance of our communications systems becomes clear. In the event of any natural or man-made emergency during the school day, the district will communicate with you through our Information System, SwiftK12. We will use this notification system as our emergency communications to send a text, voice message, and email message to the phone numbers and email which we have on file for your family. We will also post updates to our school and district websites as often as we are able and work with our local radio and TV stations during an emergency.

Developing, maintaining, and exercising the emergency plan empowers our employees in an incident to act quickly and knowledgeably. With the winter weather right around the corner, the district would like to test this system to be sure we are all prepared and all contact information is updated.

We will be conducting an emergency test on November 30th at approximately 11a.m. You will receive a test message from the district by text, phone and email.

Following the emergency test, we will send out phone and email messages confirming that all our families received a communication from the district.

If you feel you need to make changes to your contact information, a step by step guide is attached. The SwiftK12 System is integrated into PowerSchool and allows you to set your text, phone, and email message preferences. You now have the opportunity to set up your contact preferences using the parent portal.
